Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) and Karnataka State Industrial
and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) have proposed India’s first
Machine Tool Park to be set up near Tumakuru district, about 90 Kms from Bengaluru,
the capital city of Karnataka state. Tumakuru Machine Tool Park (TMTP) is planned
to be developed to international standards, meeting high infrastructure standards
and facilities. The TMTP will be a cluster of machine tool builders, makers of accessories,
components, among others. The park has been proposed to be set up in an extent of
about 542 acres of land at Vasanthanarasapura Industrial Area, III Phase near Tumakuru.
This proposed TMTP will be an integral part of Tumakuru Industrial Node (NIMZ),
a part of Chennai – Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC). One of the important machine
tool clusters in India is located in Bengaluru. There are six large and about 100
MSME machine tool units in the cluster. The units are located in Peenya, Abbigere
and Bommasandra industrial areas/estates in Bengaluru. Bengaluru alone produces
60% of the machine tools of India in terms of value, which is estimated at INR 2160
Crores. 100% FDI is allowed in the machine tools industry by the Government of India.
This growth of the machine tool industry in Karnataka can be made possible by setting
up of the Tumakuru Machine Tool Park proposed in Tumakuru district. The TMTP will
bring additional production capacity through expansion of existing units and setting
up of new units by Indian and foreign companies. Thus, proposed Tumakuru Machine
Tool Park (TMTP) will help in
*Creating the infrastructure for setting up additional capacity to enable industry
to Grow and create employment opportunities.
*Creating new capacities across the supply chain to meet increased production of
machine tools.
*Attracting investment from foreign companies to set up manufacturing units in machine
tools and related products in India, thereby reducing imports.
M/s. Tumakuru Machine Tools Park is registered under Section 8 of Companies Act,
2013 as a ‘not for profit company’ under the initiation of Government of Karnataka
as a special purpose company for implementation of integrated machine tools park
at Vasanthanarasapura in Tumakuru district, with a view to attract investment in
the machine tools sector under the Scheme of Enhancement of Competitiveness in Indian
Capital Goods Sector (ECICGS). The project cost is estimated to be at Rs.421 crore.
Government of India has agreed to contribute Rs.125 crore for the development of
the Tumakuru Machine Tool Park with world-class infrastructure/facilities.

Huge potential is estimated in machine tools manufacturing in Karnataka. Total industry
size in India in terms of production is INR 3600 Crores. Bengaluru alone produces
60% of the machine tools of India in terms of value, which is estimated at INR 2160
Crores. 100% Foreign Direct Investment is allowed in the machine tools industry
by the Government of India. This growth of the machine tool industry will be bolstered
by setting up the Tumakuru Machine Tool Park (TMTP) proposed in Tumakuru district.
The TMTP will bring additional production capacity through expansion of existing
units and setting up of new units by Indian and foreign companies. The proposed
TMTP is essential to secure for Karnataka its prominent position in machine tool
production in the country.
In the sector of machine tools manufacturing, India has registered an annual growth
of 12% in terms of production and overall consumption during 2015-16 as compared
to 2014-15. Machine tool exports from India have registered an annual growth rate
of 5% during 2015-16 as compared to 2014-15. It is clearly evident that Indian machine
tools sector offers several opportunities for investment. Given the current gap
between demand and supply, there is a clear need for adding capacities in this sector.
The industry is moving towards increasingly sophisticated Computerized Numerically
Controlled (CNC) machines, driven by demand from key user segments, such as, automobiles
and consumer durables, Aerospace etc. It is thus imperative for the industry to
expand its industry/production base, to be able to cater to the requirements, which
are currently met by imports.
Considering the conducive environment for manufacturing sector, resources available
and connectivity (NH and railway line), the Government of Karnataka (GoK) has proposed
to develop Tumakuru as an Industrial Node (NIMZ). In this regard, Karnataka Industrial
Areas Development Board (KIADB) has already acquired about 3,600 acres of land at
Vasanthanarasapura village in Tumakuru district, out of which about 2,000 acres
of land has been developed in two phases, i.e., Vasanthanarasapura Industrial Area
I and II Phase. Another 1,600 acres of land has been proposed to be developed as
Vasanthanarasapura Industrial Area III Phase. An extent of 542 acres of land has
been earmarked for development of Tumakuru Machine Tool Park (TMTP) in Vasanthanarasapura
Industrial Area III Phase, Tumakuru. The area identified for TMTP is about 542 acres
including a village and existing road. The actual extent of land use for the proposed
TMTP will be an extent of 529.5 acres excluding the village and existing road.
TMTP is proposed to exclusively promote Machine Tool Industries with world class
infrastructure facilities. The proposed TMTP is planned to be developed as a Gated
Community with state-of-the-art physical, social and technical infrastructure facilities,
with major emphasis on Non-Motorized Commuting and Walk-to-Work Principle. Also,
TMTP is envisioned to be a Green Layout with sustainable development which facilitates
resource efficiency in transportation, water and energy, in addition to optimized
consumption of materials and reduction in wastes.
WALK-TO-WORK PRINCIPLE, PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY & BICYCLE TRACKS The development of TMTP
shall promote pedestrian mobility and encourage walking within the machine tool
park. Residential homes for essential staff, amenities and recreational facilities
are proposed within walking distances from places of work to reduce commuting time.
A sound pedestrian network is proposed to be developed within the Park, with strong
considerations for accessibility, good street designs and creative land use. Treeshaded
Pedestrian sidewalks and bicycle lanes are proposed on either side of all the roads
in the service margins and also dedicated Pedestrian Walkways cum Bicycle Tracks
are proposed to be provided between the plots. In addition to non-motorised commuting,
TMTP is proposed to be developed with techniques for Rainwater Harvesting by creation
of artificial water body and harnessing of solar energy using rooftop solar harnessing
facilities by industrial units. An animated vision of Tumakuru Machine Tool Park
may be seen.
